In 93 AD, Loukas, the son of a wealthy Christian trader, is entrusted with a scroll to read in seven churches in Asia Minor. However, the scroll sparks rebellion wherever he goes and the Roman authorities attempt to track him down. But all Loukas wants to do is complete his mission and get back to Ephesus and his fiancée, Iounia.

In 2005 AD, Dima and Natasha, a young Russian couple from St. Petersburg, come across a stone box with a scroll inside, apparently found in Ephesus by Dima’s great-great-grandfather. The scroll is a complete – and early – copy of the book of Revelation. How did this scroll come to be found in Russia? And has it come to light at this very time for a reason?

The Ephesus Scroll is a novel that attempts to answer two questions. What did the book of Revelation mean to the people who first heard it? And what does it mean for us today?

Pros: I have a fuller understanding of the meaning of Revelation - that it is to encourage Christians (past, present, and future) to stand firm in Christ. My pastor preached for two years on Revelation, and I was not able to glean that important message fromhis sermons.

Cons: It drags at the beginning and seems a bit contrived at first. Also, the author has some obscure (or at least non-conservative) beliefs that I'd never heard of (and I've grown up in the church, specifically a Baptist setting).

The Ephesus Scroll Exegetical Histories Book 1 edition by Ben Chenoweth Religion Spirituality eBooks Reviews

This book was intelligently written, had a great narrative between past, present and biblical times, and this interweaving keeps the reader interested as they discover the story through the novel. While possibly not the greatest literary masterpiece, it does deliver the (somewhat) surprising truth that the book of Revelation is relevant to the current day, not so much through the use of prophetic doomsday scenarios, but by an encouragement to current-day persecuted Christians to pursue their faith through trial, just as the "Christ-ians" did in under Roman domination (ultimately often to their deaths). Ben is a good craftsman of this tale, and the book, though heavy with biblical content, does not sound overtly preachy. I encourage people to read it particularly if they enjoy books such as the Da Vinci Code, or creative non-fiction.
I loved reading this book! And through reading it, I felt I had a better ability to imagine what life was like in the late first century of what is now Turkey, as well as a better understanding of what life is like in Russia.

I really appreciated the approach of this novel to the book of Revelation, the basis being that it would have been understood by its original audience - even if it said some things that were hard to hear. I liked that the characters discussed different ways people have tried to understand the book, and work through it to make their own decisions about it.

Smoothly written, with wonderful characters, and plenty of interesting things happening make this a very enjoyable read. I hope you will enjoy it as much as I did!
COULDN'T GET INTO THIS BOOK, SUBJECTS WERE CONFUSING TO ME, JUST NOT A GOOD READ.
It is refreshing to read a book about the biblical book of 'Revelation' which places it in its original context and shows how it was hugely relevant to those in the first century for whom it was written. Do I run the risk of suffering, even to the death, or do I compromise? Such a question, in various forms, is still highly relevant today, and I loved Chenoweth's parallel story-lines, with modern day Russia paralleling the original setting of the letter. Perhaps Chenoweth could have made more reference to the choices believers had to make in the Soviet Union between standing firm or hiding their faith, but anyway - this was still both a great read with a gripping storyline, and a meaningful commentary on the book of Revelation. As such one is tempted to compare it with 'Sophie's World' by Jostein Gaarder but while I feel Gaarder loses his narrative thread in order to teach philosophy, Chenoweth does not lose his narrative thread as he teaches 'Revelation'.
To walk in the shoes of the early Christians is a better...is a practical and useful way to encourage day to day living as a Christian. Thank you
I liked the way the author wove together the stories from the different time periods. A small glimpse into what life could have been like for early Christians and how the book of Revelation could have made it's way from Patmos.
A nice story and quite well told. The setting feels authentic. I liked the story and the explanations for parts of the Biblical book of Revelation - though I do not agree with with all of Ben Chenoweths views. But then again it is rare for two people agreeing on everything in Revelation-)

Why am I not giving it 5 stars? The story did not grip me and pulled me along as some other books do.
Pros I have a fuller understanding of the meaning of Revelation - that it is to encourage Christians (past, present, and future) to stand firm in Christ. My pastor preached for two years on Revelation, and I was not able to glean that important message fromhis sermons.

Cons It drags at the beginning and seems a bit contrived at first. Also, the author has some obscure (or at least non-conservative) beliefs that I'd never heard of (and I've grown up in the church, specifically a Baptist setting).
