There are more famous names than Tom Crean’s from the “heroic age” of Antarctic exploration, but there are few stories as compelling as his. The Antarctic is a harsh place of bitter cold and darkness, where only the strong and resourceful can hope to survive. Crean was such a man. Time and again he was one of three--at times the only one--whose courage in the face of insurmountable odds saved the lives of his companions. Had he weakened and failed the lives of all might well have been lost, and their stories remained untold. He left no diary or book; his few letters speak modestly of his exploits, if at all. Tom Crean Sailor on Ice tells the story of a common man in uncommon circumstances, who met every challenge as it came with steadfast purpose. If he knew fear, he never showed it. Sailor on Ice goes with him from England to the Antarctic plateau, and back. We share his trials as they happen—the thrill of discovery, the danger of the sea-ice, the terror of extreme isolation, the tragedy of the deaths of his closest friends. Tom Crean was not most renowned of the explorers during those early years of Antarctic discovery. For that, the palms go to Shackleton, Amundsen, and Scott, with the names of other leaders not far behind. Other men, better educated and connected, would publish the stories of hardship and adventure that astonished the world. Crean’s name is occasionally mentioned in these works, as it should be; his was a distinguished career of service, not as a leader, but as a seaman. His story is not one of trial and privation leading to a tragic end, because without one man’s endurance and unflinching resolve in the face of hopeless adversity, there would be no survivors. The familiar names belong to those who claimed to lead, but those who lead are nothing without those who come a few steps behind, hauling the gear, pitching the camp, walking the long walk, steadfast, enduring. Without them, there would be no leaders. There would be no survivors, and no story to be told.

Sailor on Ice Tom Crean with Scott in the Antarctic 19101913 David Hirzel 9780615452463 Books Reviews
Sailor On Ice Tom Crean is a superbly written true story about exploration in the Antarctic during the early 1900s. Crean was the back-up guy, the crewman who never complained, but yet made the voyage of the Discovery and exploration of the frozen land at the southern tip of the earth possible. Crean sailed with Scott and this stalwart seaman lasted through minus 70 degree cold, rescued his countrymen when he needed to and took no fanfare. When he returned home, he held no speaking tour, Crean simply and admirable kept to his own business. Hirzel has the uncanny ability to put us in the scene and tug us along the snowy voyage and Antarctic trek. It was a wonder I didn't get chilblains. If you're interested in these old explorers and true tales of the sea, you'll love this book.
Excellent read
Written from an outsiders point of view I found this book most enlightening. I would recommend it for reading to anyone.
I am biased when it comes to Tom Crean, one of my all time heros. That said I really enjoyed the book.
I came across Crean in "Endurance" and visited The South Pole Inn a couple years ago. If you're even a casual fan of The Heroic Age, add this one to you shelf of "My Favorite Book".
Essentially an over-written recounting of Scott's Terra Nova expedition, with occasional mentions of what the author imagined Tom Crean was thinking at various times.
This is a beautifully written, historically rich book. Reading it has been an adventure in learning, traveling to an unfamiliar world and time through Hirzel's vivid descriptions. Tom Crean met every challenge he was faced with in Antarctica, the story is captivating, full of detail. This book is inspiring in the best sense, it makes you want to explore the world, see new places and learn new things. The author has included a glossary of Antarctic and ice terms which is very helpful to a reader unfamiliar with such. Read the book. You'll probably be disappointed when the book ends because I was.
